Our full range of superficial peels can help your complexion appear more uniform and renewed—diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and roughness.
Did you know…
that the skin begins to lose its glow over time? This is because the skin’s natural shedding of dead cells slows with age, causing it to appear dull and lackluster. Though new, healthy skin exists below the surface, it is often masked by an old and uneven external layer of skin. Dermaplaning and chemical peel combination treatments help reveal healthy, glowing skin and restore a youthful appearance.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is an in-office procedure during which an acid solution is applied to the surface of the face. The solution is left on for a few minutes, after which time it is removed or neutralized. Most people experience some mild tingling during a chemical peel, which usually takes only a few minutes to complete. Following a chemical peel, the skin may ‘flake off’ for a couple of days before revealing newer, healthier looking skin beneath the surface. Chemical peels are useful for improving the appearance of the skin and conditions like hyperpigmentation, fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, and age spots.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do chemical peels improve the skin?
Chemical peeling is a procedure that aims to accelerate skin exfoliation by the use of chemical substances resulting in renewed, healthier looking skin and a more uniform complexion.
Who can benefit from SkinMedica® Peels?
SkinMedica® Peels address the visible skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture. Peels also address skin tone unevenness that can be caused by acne scarring or pigmentary changes. SkinMedica® offers a range of different strength chemical peels that licensed medical professionals can select to provide the optimum treatment for their patients.
How do I decide which particular peel is most beneficial for me?
During the initial consultation, your skin care professional will evaluate your skin condition and recommend the appropriate peel regimen based on your needs.
Who is the ideal candidate for SkinMedica® Peels?
Illuminize Peel®, the gentlest SkinMedica® Peel is appropriate for first-time, chemical-peel patients, patients with mild skin imperfections or patients that are looking for brighter, more radiant skin with no downtime.
Vitalize Peel® is appropriate for patients with mild-to-moderate skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture.
Rejuvenize Peel™ is appropriate for patients with moderate to severe skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture.
Can SkinMedica® Peel be performed on patients with dark skin?
Illuminize Peel® and Vitalize Peel® are appropriate for all skin types.
Rejuvenize Peel™ can be performed on patients with dark skin. However, patients with deeply pigmented skin color should receive Vitalize Peel® first, and after they establish tolerability to Vitalize Peel®, they can receive Rejuvenize Peel™.
How do I prepare for this peel?
Any procedures and products that may increase skin sensitivity should be avoided before your treatment. Ask your physician or skin care specialist for details.
What should I expect during the procedure?
The complete treatment is expected to take 45 minutes, which includes ample time to address any questions you may have, and a discussion on your post peel care. The actual application procedure is approximately 20 minutes. Tolerance to the procedure varies from patient to patient. Tingling or burning sensations are normal and expected reactions. A handheld fan can be used during the procedure to minimize discomfort, which usually subsides in a few minutes.
How will my skin look right after the peel?
With Illuminize Peel®, most patients leave the office looking healthy and fresh. Mild redness or discoloration may occur and can be covered with makeup.
A Vitalize Peel® or Rejuvenize Peel™ can leave a yellowish tinge on the skin which is expected to last no longer than 2-3 hours. Mild to moderate redness is expected after any type of chemical peel procedure. The extent of redness varies from patient to patient. The face may appear redder than usual for some time after the treatment and completely resolves after the peeling is complete.
Will I peel after receiving a treatment?
With Illuminize Peel® patients should not expect to see visible peeling due to the superficial nature of this peel. There is no expected downtime with Illuminize Peel®.
With a Vitalize Peel® or Rejuvenize Peel™ treatment, the degree of peeling may vary depending on the individual’s skin condition and degree of the damage. Peeling can range from mild flaking to peeling in sheets. Regardless of the amount of peeling, the skin is still sloughing off at an accelerated rate, which will result in the following benefits: improvement in the appearance of skin tone and texture, smoothness of fine lines and wrinkles.
Your skin care professional will provide you with in depth post-procedure instructions. Your post-peel regimen will include SkinMedica® Sensitive Skin Cleanser or Facial Cleanser, moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, and Essential Defense sunscreens (tinted or untinted).
How can I protect my skin post peel?
Since the new skin is more susceptible to sunburn, extra precautions should be taken to limit sun exposure for at least one week after the peel. It is imperative to use a broad spectrum sunscreen product with an SPF of 30 or higher.
After the treatment, when can I resume my regular skin care regimen?
You can resume the use of your regular treatment products after you have completely finished peeling.
What results can I expect after the treatment?
After the Vitalize Peel®SkinMedica® Peels, patients will notice an improvement in the appearance of overall skin condition, diminishment in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoothness of skin texture, more even skin color, and improved skin clarity.
How often can I have the peel treatments?
Depending on the SkinMedica® Peel used, treatments can be repeated every 2-4 weeks.
How many treatments are required?
Multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results. The number of treatments is based on the initial level of skin damage and can vary from 3 to 6. The effect of the peel is cumulative and results are favorable when the peels are used in conjunction with SkinMedica® daily product regimen.
How do I maintain optimal results following a SkinMedica® Peels?
SkinMedica® Peels is part of a skin management program that includes SkinMedica® home-use products. To maintain optimal results achieved with the treatments, patients should use a daily skin care regimen recommended by a physician or skin care specialist.
Can pregnant or lactating women receive a SkinMedica® Peels?
SkinMedica® peels should not be administered to pregnant or lactating women.
Why get a combination of dermaplaning and chemical peel?
While dermaplaning and chemical peels are effective apart, they work synergistically together. Dermaplaning helps to remove the outer layers of the skin, making the chemical solution in a chemical peel far more effective. Since dermaplaning enables the acid solution to reach deeper levels of the dermis, the chemical solution in a combination treatment is left on the skin for a shorter period of time than it is during a chemical peel alone. Dermaplaning can be combined with many different types of chemical peels, from mild glycolic and salicylic acid peels to stronger peels containing trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
